The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
