The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
