The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city. 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
