The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 to an orphaned relative 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
True are the words of God the Almighty.
