The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city. 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
