The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
