The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
