The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 an orphaned relative 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
Almighty God's Truth.
