The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city. 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
