The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 to an orphaned relative 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
