The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 in which you are now living 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
