The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
