The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
