The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
