The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 an orphaned relative 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
