The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
