The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
