The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 in which you are now living 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
