The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 an orphaned relative 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
