The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
