The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
