The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
