The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
