Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
