The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 an orphaned relative 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
