The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
