The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 of an orphaned relative 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
