The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 in which you are now living 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
