The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
