The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
