The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
