The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
