Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
