The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
