The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
