The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
