The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 to an orphaned relative 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
