The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
