The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the sun and its heat and brightness, 1 And by oath of the moon when it follows the sun 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 by the night when it covers the earth with darkness, 4 Consider the sky and its wondrous make, 5 and the earth and all its expanse! 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 He who purifies it will indeed be successful, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, 11 When the most wretched of them was sent forth. 12 although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
