The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By oath of the sun and its light 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 and by the day when it displays him 3 and the night as it veils it darkly! 4 And the heaven and Him Who made it, 5 And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. 6 And by Nafs (Adam or a person or a soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in proportion; 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). 9 and failed is he who buried it! 10 Thamood belied in their pride 11 When among them the great wretch arose, 12 And the apostle of God had to tell them: "This is God's she-camel, let her drink." 13 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). 14 He does not fear the result (of their destruction). 15
