The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By oath of the sun and its light 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 And the day when it revealeth him, 3 By the Night as it conceals it; 4 by the heavens and that (Power) which established them, 5 and by the earth and That which extended it! 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 and truly lost is he who buries it [in darkness]. 10 Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, 11 when the most wicked man among them rose up. 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 He does not fear the result (of their destruction). 15
