The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the sun and its brightness 1 And by oath of the moon when it follows the sun 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 The night when it covers him over, 4 And by oath of the heaven and by oath of Him Who made it. 5 and by the earth and how He spread it, 6 by the soul and how He formed it, 7 then inspired it to understand what was right and wrong for it. 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 and failed is he who buried it! 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 When the most wretched of them was sent forth. 12 Then Allah's Messenger warned them: “Hands off the she-camel and her drink!” 13 But they rejected his statement as a lie and hamstrung the she-camel. For that crime their Lord rumbled down upon them, utterly razing them to the ground. 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
