The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the sun and his morning brightness 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 And the heaven and Him Who built it, 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it 7 Then He inspired it to understand what is right and wrong for it; 8 prosperous is he who purified it, 9 and he who suppresses it will be ruined. 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 Then Allah's Messenger warned them: “Hands off the she-camel and her drink!” 13 But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
