The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
And by the sun and its brightness; 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 Consider the day as it reveals the world, 3 And by oath of the night when it hides it 4 And [by] the sky and He who constructed it 5 by the earth and that (Power) which spread it out 6 And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
