The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the sun and its rising brightness 1 by the moon, which follows it, 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance, 11 when the most wicked of them broke forth, 12 And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." 13 But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground). 14 And He fears not its consequence. 15
