The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory; 3 and the night as it veils it darkly! 4 By the heaven and Who built it, 5 And by the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 He has succeeded who purifies it, 9 And miserable is he who hath buried it. 10 Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" 13 But they belied him, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it (their village). 14 He does not fear the result (of their destruction). 15
