The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Sun and his (glorious) splendour; 1 By the Moon as she follows him; 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 Consider the sky and its wondrous make, 5 and by the earth and how He spread it, 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 He has succeeded who purifies it, 9 And he who confines it will surely come to grief. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 And He fears not its consequence. 15
