The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 and by the day when it displays him 3 and the night as it veils it darkly! 4 by the heavens and that (Power) which established them, 5 And the earth and Him Who extended it, 6 And by oath of the soul and by oath of Him Who made it proper. 7 and inspired it to lewdness and godfearing! 8 Truly he succeeds that purifies it, 9 And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds). 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 When among them the great wretch arose, 12 So Allah's apostle said to them (Leave alone) Allah's she-camel, and (give) her (to) drink. 13 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). 14 He dreadeth not the sequel (of events). 15
