The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Sun and his (glorious) splendour; 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 Consider the day as it reveals the world, 3 by the night when it covers the earth with darkness, 4 And the heaven and Him Who built it, 5 And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. 6 And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it 7 and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. 10 The Thamud denied (the truth) in their perverseness 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 the Messenger of Allah said to them: '(This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink' 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 And He fears not its consequence. 15
