The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the sun and its midmorning, 1 And the moon when it follows the sun, 2 Consider the day as it reveals the world, 3 The night when it covers him over, 4 And the heaven and Him Who built it, 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). 9 and failed has he who seduces it. 10 Thamud belied in their exorbitance. 11 when their arch-criminal rose up in rage. 12 The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". 13 But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them: 14 And He does not fear the consequence thereof. 15
